First Job: Student Perspective

Every year at Tubman we partner with the Step Up program in Minneapolis. This program helps connect young people with workplaces that host interns, and the Step Up program covers the cost of employing the interns. This summer we have had two Step Up interns in our Movement for Violence Prevention program. They have helped us with social media posts, blog content, curriculum revision, and more!

One of our interns shares her experience this summer with her first job, and some tips for people starting their first job:

On my first day it was easy. I got a tour and I like when we go to schools. It’s easy and not too tough. It’s a good first job – it gives experiences that will be helpful on a real job. It is kind of hard to come on time sometimes because I’m a late sleeper, but I like my schedule. Overall, it’s a pretty good job. I would recommend Step Up to others and Tubman is great and great to interns. I haven’t had any problems.

Tips for people starting their first job:

  • Have everything you might need with you – be prepared.
  • Be respectful.
  • Set alarms.
  • Come on time.
  • Don’t procrastinate.
  • Ask for help.
  • Do your work.
  • Tell your supervisor if you have any problems.
  • Be smart with your money.
