Safety Project

Safety Project

The Safety Project provides high quality pro bono representation and advice clinics, to low-income victim survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking, seeking civil Protection Orders, and who have a compelling need for legal assistance.

Referrals to the Safety Project come from Legal Advocates at Tubman and other Community Domestic Violence Agencies, and the advocate(s) stays on to support the client and attorney throughout the case. Tubman staff gathers information and screens clients for income eligibility, merit, and need for representation.

Tubman carries malpractice insurance that covers our pro bono volunteers. All Tubman volunteer attorneys have access to the Volunteer Portal, which houses resources, templates, and more. Support of Tubman staff attorneys and other volunteers are provided via case consultation and mentorship.

Safety Project volunteers must be licensed in MN and need not have family law experience. All interested volunteers must attend one of our “Safety Project 101” CLE half-day trainings prior to onboarding. On average, Safety Project cases require approximately 10-20 hours of work, and we request that all volunteers take a minimum of two cases per year.
