Family Law Attorney Opportunities

Tubman’s Family Law program couldn’t do its work without a dedicated team of volunteer family law attorneys. As the need for legal representation for low-income victim survivors grows, our team is looking to grow as well.

There are a variety of ways to contribute, from giving basic family law legal advice to providing full representation in family court. Whether you can offer one evening a quarter, or want to pledge to have one full representation case open at all times, Tubman welcomes your legal expertise.

Tubman provides case screening, consultation with our staff attorneys, community resources for clients, and malpractice insurance for your pro bono work.

  • Family Law Representation

Representation is far and above our client’s greatest area of need. Representation on family law matters, specifically in Hennepin, Ramsey, and Washington counties. Tubman screens clients for income eligibility, compelling need for representation, and provides ongoing case consultation and resources as necessary.

  • Family Law Brief Services Clinics

More than advice, but less than representation, Brief Services Clinics (BSCs) assist clients representing themselves in family law matters, primarily in Hennepin, Ramsey, and Washington counties. Volunteers in this program assist drafting court documents, and preparing for hearings, but do not appear in court.

Tubman screens clients for income eligibility, legal merit, and need for representation. Volunteers are scheduled for a two hour clinic and meet with one client at each clinic. Volunteer Attorneys are often assisted by a volunteer paralegal or law student prior to the clinic to help client draft documents or otherwise prepare for the clinic. We ask for a minimum of one clinic per quarter. Clinics are typically provided via phone or virtually, although in person clinics can be arranged.

  • Family Law 30 min. Advice Clinics

Provide individual legal advice to clients in a virtual clinic setting, via phone or other virtual options. You will be scheduled for a two-hour clinic and meet with 5 clients for 20-30 minutes each. Clinics are designed to clarify legal issues, answer brief questions and provide legal advice and direction—not on-going representation. We ask for a minimum of one clinic per quarter. Open to family law attorneys with at least two years of experience in their field.
